Give a photo soft, rounded corners

Rounded corners make a picture look like an app card, a sticker or a modern print. They are popular for story stickers, product cards, thumbnails, profile images and slides in a presentation. Cut all the way, the rounding becomes a circle, which is how you make a round profile photo or a circular badge.

The page starts with 12% rounded, transparent corners. You choose the radius in pixels (up to 400) or as a percentage of the photo's shorter side, or switch to a circle or squircle (the smooth rounded square used for app icons). The corners can be transparent or filled with a color of your choice.

How to round the corners of an image

  1. Open the image

Pick a file or drag one in. A copied image can be pasted too.

  2. Choose the shape

    Rounded rectangle, squircle or circle.

  3. Set the radius

Use pixels for an exact size, or percent so the rounding scales with the picture.

  4. Background and export

Keep the corners transparent and save as PNG or WebP, or pick a fill color and save as JPG.

Transparent corners and file formats

Transparency only survives in formats that support it. PNG and WebP keep the rounded corners see-through, so the picture can sit on any background. JPG has no transparency, so the corners need a fill color; choose the color of the background where the image will be shown.

Instagram itself does not keep transparency in feed posts. If you upload a PNG with transparent corners as a post, the corners are filled during upload. For a rounded photo in the feed, pick a fill color that matches your style, such as white for a clean grid or your brand color.

How much rounding to use

To add a visible border as well as rounding, combine this with a frame from photo frames, which includes a rounded card style. For round highlight icons, the highlight cover maker is the better fit.

Round corner questions

Why are my corners white or black instead of transparent?

The file was probably saved as JPG, which cannot store transparency, or the app you opened it in shows transparency as a color. Save as PNG and check again.

Can I make a circular profile picture?

Yes. Choose the circle shape on a square photo. Instagram crops profile photos into a circle anyway, so for the profile itself a centered square photo is enough.

What is a squircle?

A shape between a square and a circle with continuously curving sides. It looks smoother than a rectangle with rounded corners and is the shape of most phone app icons.

Does rounding change the image size?

No. The width and height stay the same; only the corners are cut or filled.
