Frequently asked questions

Answers about using the site, editing photos, Instagram lookups and downloads, and your privacy.

Using Insta-Editor

What is Insta-Editor?

A free website with tools for Instagram: a photo editor with more than twenty specialized tools, collage and template makers, highlight covers, fonts, hashtags, captions, downloaders for public posts and stories, video and audio converters, and checkers for public profiles. It is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed or sponsored by Instagram or Meta.

Is it really free?

Yes. Ads on the pages pay for the site, so there is no premium plan, no sign-up and no watermark on anything you make. Instagram lookups have a fair-use limit per visitor, currently 40 an hour and 150 a day, because each lookup costs us money.

Who runs Insta-Editor?

Insta-Editor is an independent site, online since 2021. We are not connected to Instagram or Meta, and we do not run any of the follower or like services that advertise on similar sites. You can read more on the about page and reach us through the contact form.

Do I need to install an app or create an account?

No. Everything runs in a web browser on phones, tablets and computers. Open a tool and start; there is nothing to install and nothing to sign up for. On a phone you can add the site to your home screen from the browser menu if you use it often, so it opens like an app.

Which browsers are supported?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. The video tools need built-in video encoding: we tested them in Chrome and Edge 94 or newer; Firefox 130 or newer on a computer and Safari 26 or newer should work too, but we have not measured them yet. If a feature is not available in your browser, the tool tells you.

Why does a tool say I should switch to another language?

The site is available in many languages. If your browser prefers a language that the site offers, a small banner suggests that version. You can close it, and the site remembers your choice on your device.

Photo editing and design

Are my photos uploaded when I edit them?

No. The editor, the design tools and the converters process your files in your browser, on your device. We never receive them, which also means we cannot recover a photo you did not save. Save your work before you close the tab or switch to another app on a phone.

What size should I use for Instagram?

1080 pixels wide. For the feed, 1080 × 1350 (4:5) or the taller 1080 × 1440 (3:4); for stories and Reels, 1080 × 1920 (9:16). The size guide lists every format with Instagram's official limits.

How do I post a photo without cropping?

Put it in an allowed shape with a border or a blurred background, using the blurred background tool. The no-crop guide explains three methods.

Can I open iPhone photos in HEIC format?

Yes, in Safari 17 or newer, which can read HEIC. In other browsers the editor asks you to convert the photo to JPG first. To have your iPhone save new photos as JPG, choose Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible.

Can I use the templates and designs commercially?

Yes. The templates are our own designs, the icons come from Tabler Icons (MIT licence) and the fonts are under the SIL Open Font License, so the images you export can be used commercially, for example on business accounts and in ads. See also the terms.

Instagram lookups and downloads

Can you show private Instagram accounts?

No, and no other site can either. Private posts and stories are visible only to followers the owner approved. Our tools show what Instagram shows everyone: the name, picture, bio and counts. Sites that promise more usually want your password, a paid survey or a download, and none of them deliver. The private profile page explains what is visible.

Will someone know I watched their story?

Not through our tools. The story viewer does not use your Instagram account, so your name cannot be added to the owner's viewer list. The anonymous stories page explains what that means in detail.

May I download other people's photos and videos?

Only with permission, or for purposes the law allows, such as personal viewing. Reposting someone's work without permission can infringe their copyright. Our guide to downloading covers the rules.

Why does a link not work?

The most common reasons: the account is private, the post was deleted, the story has expired, or it is a short link with /share/. Open a short link first, then copy the full address. If many lookups fail at once, check the Instagram status page.

Why do I see a "busy" or "too many requests" message?

Either you have reached the hourly or daily lookup limit, or the service has used up its budget for the day. Try again later; the message says when. The limits exist because every lookup is a paid request to our data provider, and they keep the tools free for everyone instead of a few heavy users.

Can I get more followers or likes here?

No. We check numbers, we do not sell them. Buying or exchanging followers and likes breaks Meta's spam policy and lowers your real engagement. The engagement guide shows what works instead.

Privacy and safety

Do you ask for my Instagram password?

Never. None of our tools need a login. If any site asks for your Instagram password to show you something, close it: Instagram's terms forbid collecting other people's login details, and such pages are usually used to take over accounts. If you already entered your password somewhere, change it in the Instagram app and turn on two-factor authentication.

What do you store when I look up an account?

The public answer from our data provider is cached for a short time, from 5 minutes for stories to 24 hours for some checks, to keep repeated lookups fast. Your recent searches are kept only in your browser. Details are in the privacy policy.

My public account appears in your tools. What can I do?

Our tools show only what your account makes public on Instagram. To limit that, switch your account to private in Instagram's settings, or turn off reel downloads and remixing for individual Reels. You can also contact us through the contact form.
